The Lecture on "Hardware-Software Co-design of Stream Processing Systems" was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the discipline development of School of Computer Science and Technology at HUST.

time:November 28, 2023 author:SHI Zheng edit:SHI Zheng

The lecture for the 50th anniversary of the School of Computer Science and Technology discipline development at HUST was held at the south No.1 building. Dr. Shuhao Zhang from SCSE NTU (School of Computer Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University) was invited as the keynote speaker who gave a scholarly report themed on "Software-Hardware Coordinated Stream Processing System."

Dr. Shuhao Zhang's research primarily focuses on the design of database systems and extensive data processing frameworks, specifically emphasizing high-performance stream processing algorithms and systems. He regularly contributes to the program committees of high-performance computing (HPC) conferences such as SC, ICDCS, and ICPP and database and data mining (DB/DM) conferences such as ICDE, KDD, and EDBT. His work encompasses parallel and distributed computing, database, machine learning systems, and data-centric machine learning, focusing on event stream processing.

In this lecture, Dr. Shuhao Zhang vividly introduced the characteristics, industry outlook, and system situation of stream computing. Besides, he discussed the research approach for optimizing stream systems by integrating hardware and software. This approach involves jointly designing hardware and software to adapt to newly designed hardware architectures. Specifically, it includes benchmark testing of the system, design optimization of the system, and development requirements of applications. The goal is to apply stream data processing methods to large-scale model training, thereby reducing the time required for training data processing.

Subsequently, Dr. Shuhao Zhang presented his current research directions and related achievements. These include research on stream operators, system benchmark testing, hardware-aware stream computing design optimization, and new stream systems tailored for emerging applications. Notably, the new stream systems designed for new applications have already been commercially applied.

In conclusion, Dr. Shuhao Zhang provided a summary and outlook on the development trends of stream computing. As an emerging paradigm, stream computing and its related fields hold vast prospects for the future.

During the lecture, Dr. Shuhao Zhang actively interacted with the audience, guiding them to think and providing enthusiastic responses to questions. This fostered a deeper understanding of the lecture content among the attendees and created a favorable atmosphere.

The "Discipline Development Lectures in CS" is a series of scholar exchange activities that the School of Computer Science and Technology initiates on its 50th anniversary. The lecture series includes seminars, joint forums, and workshops, inviting renowned experts and scholars in the field of computer science as well as young talents. It aims to establish an international platform for academic exchange and cooperation, broaden the theoretical perspective of academic talents, and promote disciplinary development and global communication. Faculty and students are encouraged to participate in these activities actively.

This lecture is supported by the "One School, One University" cooperation particular project of the International Exchange Office of HUST.
