Former HK Chief Executive Carrie Lam visits HUST

Former Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam paid a visit to Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), from September 10th to 11th, where she engaged with HUST’s faculty and students. Lam was welcomed by HUST President You Zheng and Vice Presidents Xu Xiaodong and Chen Jianguo.


Lam met with You Zheng at the Wutongyu Academic Exchange Center on the morning of September 11th.


You extended a warm welcome to Lam on her visit. He briefed Lam on HUST’s history, academic advancement and contributions to social development, highlighting the university’s unique advantages in higher education, its robust faculty base, as well as its fruitful nourishment of innovative talent. He expressed his gratitude to the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for its affirmation and support to HUST graduates. He also conveyed his hopes to strengthen cooperation with Hong Kong in talent cultivation, scientific and technological innovation, and the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements.


Carrie Lam expressed her gratitude for HUST’s warm reception. She pointed out that, with its inclusion on the SAR’s Top Talent Pass Scheme, HUST enjoys growing prestige in Hong Kong. She hoped that more HUSTers will reside in Hong Kong in the future and do their part in serving the development of the SAR. Lam also called for deeper collaboration in higher education, technological research and development, and youth entrepreneurship, to help Hong Kong better integrate into the country’s overall development.

 

 

After the meeting, Lam visited  the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics and National Center of Technology Innovation for Digital Construction, both operated by HUST, as well as the History Museum of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

 

 

In the afternoon, Lam gave a speech on the theme of the Practices of the One Country, Two Systems Policy in HKSAR. Chen Jianguo, Vice President of the University, presided over the event.

 


 

In her speech, Lam reviewed Hong Kong’s development over the past century, highlighting its achievements under the “One Country, Two Systems” policy. She stressed the system’s importance for Hong Kong's long-term stability and prosperity. To help strengthen cooperation with the mainland and achieve mutual growth, she invited exceptional HUSTers to study and work in Hong Kong, and actively participate in the SAR’s future.

 

 

During the Q&A session, Lam offered suggestions in response to students’ questions regarding the development of the high-tech industry in Hong Kong, the construction of cultural and arts centers, and how young people from the Chinese mainland can better pursue opportunities in Hong Kong.


Student representative from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning presented Lam with hand-made gifts depicting HUST characteristics.

 

 

 

 

On September 10th, Lam visited the School of Public Administration. She met with Xu Xiaodong and administrative officials from the school, and exchanged ideas about academic exchange and project collaboration. During her conversation later with representatives from the college, students and alumni, Lam introduced Hong Kong’s public governance and development in higher education, shared insights from her 42 years of public service, and had discussions with the faculty and students over Hong Kong SAR's constitutional order. She encouraged students in public administration to build a robust foundation of knowledge, enhance teamwork, prioritize social justice, and adhere to a people-centered approach, so as to become more well-rounded and visionary individuals.

 

Also present were relevant officials from the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, the Office of Alumni Affairs, the Office of Student Affairs, and the School of Public Administration.
