Jun 9, 2023

From May 21 to 28, HUST and the National University of Singapore (NUS) jointly organized the "Global Competence" seminar, engaging 23 administrative staff from HUST in a six-day study session at NUS’s Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

On May 22, the seminar kicked off. Loh Wai Lam, Global Academic Director of the NUS Global Relations Office, when greeting the trainees, said: "The long-term partnership between Huazhong University of Science and Technology and National University of Singapore has elevated into school-level cooperation this year for extensive exchange and cooperation. The 'Global Competence' seminar will further promote the development of academic research, talent training and cultural communication between the two universities."

Chen Jie, Director of the Office of International Affairs of HUST, in her online speech, said that NUS is a top comprehensive research university in Asia. She hoped that HUST will draw on NUS’s strategies to enhance its international management and service capabilities, improve its governance system, and take new approaches to talent development through this seminar. Luo Yi, Deputy Director of the Office of Development & Planning of HUST, spoke as representative of the participants, expressing his gratitude for this seminars careful organization and his hopes to engage in in-depth exchange with experts from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy over the next few days.

By building on HUST’s existing management model, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy tailored training courses for the seminar, inviting seven well-known experts from different disciplines with rich management experience to teach the seminar.

The lectures covered a wide range of topics, from NUS’s basic profile to its management concepts and practices. The trainees said they’ve significantly benefited from these lessons.

Trainees visited the NUS’s Central Library

In addition to in-class teaching, the seminar held field visits to various locations: the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, the Central Library and the student dormitories on Bukit Timah Campus. There they experienced the advanced educational philosophies and high-level facilities on offer.

Exchange between trainees and alumni in Singapore

In their spare time, the trainees reached out to our alumni in NUS and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), learning about their experiences of studying, living, and working in Singapore and expressing HUST’s care and best wishes to them.

At the graduation ceremony, Wu Muluan, associate professor and Assistant Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, presented the completion certificates to the trainees. He expressed his pride as an alumnus of HUST for its rapid development and achievements, and was delighted to have in-depth exchange with the students at NUS. He also expressed hope for future opportunities to visit HUST again and for more teachers and students from HUST to engage in exchange with NUS.

The HUST-NUS "Global Competence" seminar is an important part of HUST’s endeavors to implement its global strategy and enhance its facultys international capabilities, representing the first overseas program in HUST’s "Global Competence Enhancement" since the outbreak of the pandemic.
