HUST team invited to Biennale Architettura 2023

Aug 14, 2023

Professor Geng Hong's team from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of HUST, in collaboration with the Wuhan Municipal Natural Resources Conservation and Utilization Center, was again invited by the European Cultural Centre to participate in the Biennale Architettura 2023. The biennale is scheduled from May 21 to November 26, 2023.

Themed "Wetland and Village: A Community with a Shared Future for Life," HUST’s segment seeks to highlight the harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, a representative concept of Chinese civilization. The segment also showcases Wuhan's innovative practices in wetland ecological conservation and restoration, rural revitalization, and culture inheritance.

For centuries, the Anshan wetland system in Jiangxia District, Wuhan, has fostered a thriving natural ecology and significantly shaped people’s lifestyles in the region. Local farmers live in close-knit communities, supporting each other, and embracing sustainable development in harmony with nature. By showcasing the sustainable strategies adopted by local communities and the efficacy of these approaches in maintaining wetland ecosystems, the exhibition promotes harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature and inspires people’s sense of responsibility for environmental protection.

Geng Hong was first invited to participate in the exhibition in 2021, when she formed a creative team with several colleagues and presented "One-Day House Construction," an intangible cultural heritage project of the Nanmei Lahu ethnic group from Lincang, Yunnan. The project received a positive response with nearly 420,000 views both online and offline.

Geng's team has long been focused on rural poverty alleviation, rural revitalization, and high-quality development. It also delves into rural planning, as well as the enhancement of human habitats.

Boasting its century-long history, the Biennale Architettura in Italy represents cutting-edge design concepts globally. This year’s exhibition themed "Time Space Existence" in European Cultural Centre calls for rethinking the relationship between humanity and nature.
