HUSTers shine in the 6th China Graduate Student Future Aircraft Innovation Competition

The 6th China Graduate Student Future Aircraft Innovation Competition was held in Central South University (CSU) on November 21st and 22nd. Two HUST teams, “ Class 1 Grade 6 of Hope Primary School” and “iRobot CNC”, from the School of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering and the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering respectively, won the national 3rd prize. In addition, HUST received the award as “National Excellent Organizer”.



          


“Class 1 Grade 6 of Hope Primary School ” won the 3rd prize with their work “ROV & UAV-Based Water-Air Amphibious Flying Robot Intelligent System”. The team members are Wenjing Xiao, Tianlong Jia, Xinyu Chang, Qin Chen and Weijie Mao. This team was under the instruction of their teachers Yuqian Zhang and Qian Xie. The water-air amphibious flying robot they designed is able to switch navigation between air and water seamlessly. It has combined the structural characteristics of ROV underwater and UAV quad-rotor robots. Based on deep learning methods for bridge image recognition and diagnosis, the flying robot can obtain a more accurate assessment of bridge damage. Besides, compared with traditional unmanned vehicles, the innovative environmental-friendly power supply method of a combination of solar power and lithium batteries also makes long-term detailed inspections possible.


Another work, “A Small-Scale Dragonfly-Like Flapping-Wing Aircraft” was designed by Zhen Li, Jiatao Xiang, Qianlong Xie, Tao Wang, Xudong Teng under the instruction of their teacher Huan Zhao. Based on the dragonfly’s flying method, iRobot CNC designed the mechanical structure, power unit and overall model independently. Additionally, they optimized the structure and size parameters, and analyzed and selected the materials used. The team used ANSYS to carry out static analysis of the flapping-wing aircraft under linear and nonlinear conditions, and the difference between the values was within 2.5%. At the same time, they used ADAMS to carry out the dynamics simulation analysis. All combined, the designed aircraft has high universality and feasibility, with the ability to simulate the flight gestures of the dragonfly in practice, and provide theoretical basis and reference for in-depth study of the dragonfly flapping-wing aircraft.


A total of 2,752 graduates from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, National University of Defense Technology, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Northwestern Polytechnical University and HUST and so forth stood out and qualified for the finals. The competition consisted of 513 registered teams and 400 submitted works. After a preliminary online evaluation by experts, 124 teams (100 regular ones and 24 representing certain corporations) from 34 graduate training institutions across the country stood out and qualified for the national finals. In the finals, qualifiers were required to give work report, PPT defense display, static work display, physical flight demonstration, experts Q & A and so forth. More than a hundred experts evaluated 10 aspects of finalists’ works - including the novelty and innovation, technical originality, scientific merit, technical depth, expected economic returns, and comprehensive performance of their defense. The competition was divided into two categories: innovative works and physical works, and both award-winning works from HUST belong in the former category.


The China Graduate Flight Vehicle Innovation Competition is one of the thematic events of the China Postgraduate Innovation & Practice Competitions. It is guided, organized and co-organized by a variety of prestigious departments and federations including China’s Department of Degree Management & Postgraduate Education and the International Astronautical Federation. Themed as “Intelligent Aerospace, Leading the Future”, this year’s competition was organized by CSU, and has gained wide support from the Industry-University-Research (IUR) community.
