The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), established in 1953, is among the founding disciplines of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and constitutes a major effort of the university to achieve academic excellence worldwide. The School of MSE consists of 8 research centers, namely, Center for New Energy Materials and Devices, Center for Crystalline Materials and Micro/Nano Devices, New Metallic Materials Center, Center for Semiconductor Materials and Devices, Center for Digital Forming and Mould Technology, Precision Forming Technology Center, Rapid Manufacturing Center, and Center for Joining and Electronic Packaging.


The School of MSE operates several high-level research laboratories and teaching centers, including: State Key Laboratory of Material Processing and Die & Mould Technology, Productivity Promotion Center for Rapid Prototyping Manufacturing of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Key Laboratory for Large-Format Battery Materials and System of the Ministry of Education, National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Materials Science & Engineering, and 3 National Engineering Education Center for Practice such as HUST-Guangxi Yuchai National Engineering Education Center for Practice, HUST-Jiangsu Pacific National Engineering Education Center for Practice, and HUST-YTO National Engineering Education Center for Practice.


The School of MSE has become a vibrant community for materials innovation and education. The faculty and staff are led by academicians and well-known professors, including: 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 68 professors, and 58 associate professors. Among them, nearly 50 were selected for the national talent plan. Cutting-edge researches are performed by different research groups covering all areas of materials science and engineering which are systematically supported by the advanced research facilities including two national labs (Wuhan National Laboratory for optoelectronics and Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center). Research at the School of MSE has made domestic and international impact in several areas, including: Computer Simulation of Materials Processing, Rapid Prototyping, Mould CAD/CAE, Materials Laser Processing, Precision Molding Technology, Robot-assisted Materials Processing, Energy Materials, Carbon Materials, Nanomaterials, Optoelectronic Materials, Metallic Materials and Electronic Packaging.


Advantages have been established in intensive educational programs of the School at both undergraduate and graduate level. In detail, undergraduate degree programs are offered in 3 major subjects: Materials Science and Engineering, Material Forming and Control Engineering, and Electronic Packaging. The first two are national first-class undergraduate majors and Material Forming and Control Engineering major has passed the international engineering professional certification (Washington Accord), ranking 1st in China; graduate programs leading to master and doctoral degrees are also available in the School of MSE, in addition to a postdoctoral research program in the discipline of Materials Science and Engineering.
